The Importance of Photography in Preserving History

The advancement of digital technology has made snapping and storing photos easy. Every day, experts estimate that people capture billions of photos. It’s easy to see how we may take for granted this technology that is now so common. After all, if you have a dog or cat, just think of how many pet photos are on your smartphone right now.

However, photography has played an extremely important role in preserving history since its inception. French scientist Joseph Niepce took the very first photograph in the entire world in 1826. Titled “View from the Window at Le Gras,” the photo depicts a view of the courtyard from a window upstairs in his home.

As photography grew more popular, it became important in preserving history. Photos allow us to have glimpses into lives, places, and events that no longer exist. They can also help us to understand how things have changed over time. For Montreal, photos can help us look back at nearly half of its history.

The Earliest Known Photo of Montreal

While Joseph Niepce took the first photograph ever in France, it wasn’t too long afterwards that someone captured the first photograph of Montreal. The first picture taken in Montreal is from the early 1850s using an interesting method.

We do not know the exact date of Montreal’s first photograph; however, estimations suggest that someone captured the first image of Montreal in either 1851 or 1853. This date is based on the art curation team from Montreal’s McCord Stewart Museum, an excellent place to visit for those wanting to learn more about Montreal’s rich history.

This particular photograph is quite different from the digital ones today and even the ones taken on film a generation ago. It was taken using daguerreotype, which was the first publicly available process for taking a photo. It was popular throughout the 1840s and 1850s, involving placing a polished sheet of silver-plated copper that had been treated with light-sensitive fumes into a camera. Once there, it was exposed to the light and treated it with mercury vapor to make the image visible. Then, they gave it a liquid chemical treatment to remove sensitivity to light.

It was this complex process that resulted in Montreal’s first known photograph. What was the photograph of? It shows a landscape view of Beaver Hall Hill and Saint Antoine Street. Both St. Andrew’s Church and St. Patrick’s Church are visible in the image. The first image of Montreal provides a glimpse into our city nearly two centuries ago.

A Brief History of Mont Saint Paul Street

As you may know from our earlier post, Montreal was founded in 1642 as the settlement of Fort Ville-Marie, an early French settlement in the region. The very first street was created near a route that bordered a fort that once stood in the city. The street was created by François Dollier de Casson and was named for Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve, who founded Montreal. In fact, the city’s founder later established a home on the street in 1650.

In 1672, Saint Paul Street was paved with cobblestones, a look that the majority of the street still maintains today, harkening back to its historical past. At this time, Saint Paul Street served as the center of the area’s fur trade, a critical part of Montreal’s early history. Canoes would arrive via the St. Lawrence River and unload their furs along the street to be sold.

Saint Paul Street would be the city’s main thoroughfare for the majority of its life. Over time, the neighborhood situated around Saint Paul Street, known aptly as Old Montreal, started to change. It became home to many warehouses as industry grew while fewer people resided on the street in homes. By the 1950s, people were looking at the possibility of revitalizing the neighborhood by tearing down many of the old buildings.

Fortunately, this plan was scrapped after much debate. Instead, efforts were made to preserve the history of the neighborhood, including the buildings. Instead, Saint Paul Street would find itself becoming a central part of Montreal’s tourism scene, with its cobblestone streets and historic sites helping transport visitors back to the early days of the French settlement.

Saint Paul Street Today

If you have visited Montreal, you’ve likely spent time on Saint Paul Street. Today, the street maintains much of its historic look with new appeal. The western portion of the street has become a popular place for offices and places like the Phi Centre. Meanwhile, the eastern portion of Saint Paul Street is the prime place for tourist to visit.

As you walk around Saint Paul Street, you’ll notice throngs of t-shirt shops and other tourist places. However, one of the most exciting aspects to check out is Place Jacques-Cartier, a square that serves as the entry to the Old Port. Here, you will find many restaurants, exciting street performers, and a car-free area in the summer. If you are visiting our wonderful city, here are some things to do on Saint Paul Street.

Notre Dame de bon Secours Chapel

While not as famous as the Notre Dame Basilica, this chapel serves as a historical area worth a visit. Built over the ruins of another chapel, you will see beautiful stained glass, painted murals, and ornate architecture in this building. Nearby is the Marguerite Bourgeoys Museum (Musée Marguerite Bourgeoys), which celebrates the history of the city’s first teacher as well as being home to an archaeological site. The remains of the stone chapel, founded by the museum’s namesake in 1675, closely approximate the outline of some of the oldest First Nations sites in Old Montreal.

Place d’Armes

Just a short walk off of Saint Paul Street, you will find the public space of Place d’Armes. If you love art, this is a place you’ll definitely want to check out during your first visit in Montreal. This space features a lot of public art and is a great spot for people-watching. Montreal is truly a city with many public spaces that make the city lively and one of a kind in Canada and North America.

Marche Bonsecours

Beneath an iconic silver dome, you will find Marche Bonsecours. This building was constructed in 1847 and served as City Hall for several decades before being converted into a market. It served as the major market in Montreal until the 1960s. Restored as a public space in 1996, it is currently a retail center where you can shop from a variety of boutiques and galleries while also having dining options at several restaurants.

See a Vestige of the Original Montreal

While you won’t find people unloading fur pelts today, you can still find excellent reminders of Montreal’s long history on rue Saint-Paul. You can find many modern accoutrements such as fancy restaurants, artsy shops, and lively entertainment. What Is Poutine?

When you think about Canada, there are likely many things that come to mind. The nation is well known for its welcoming people, beautiful scenery, and wildlife. However, when it comes to food, the national dish of Canada is poutine. A survey found that 21% of Canadians listed poutine as their favourite iconic Canadian food, giving it first place over things such as maple syrup and lobster.

Poutine is a relatively simple dish, which is likely one of the reasons it has grown such in popularity. It is fairly easy for any restaurant to add it to their menu. It is also a warm, hearty dish that is perfect for Canada’s cold winters. This dish consists of three essential ingredients:

• French Fries. Specifically, these are traditionally fairly thick and prepared in a manner where they are crispy on the outside yet soft on the inside.
• Cheese Curds. Cheese curds for poutine must be fresh. They also should soften up while still maintaining their texture when the dish is served.
• Gravy. Traditionally, this is a brown gravy that is thin enough to penetrate the gaps in the dish without being watery, providing the perfect consistency.

Where Did Poutine Originate?

When looking at the history and origins of la poutine, there is not a clear cut answer as to the first place to serve the dish. In fact, you will find several restaurants and regions laying claim to the potential origin of this dish. The one thing that is well-established is that the dish originated within Quebec. Making poutine a distinctly Quebec creation in the 1950’s. Let’s look at the history of how we got to this tasty dish that you’ll find on menus throughout Canada.

Le Lutin qui Rit

The most prevailing theory regarding the origins of la poutine brings us to 1957 rural Quebec and the small dairy farming town of Warwick. This is by far the most widespread version of the story for many Quebec residents. A restaurant in this town, Le Lutin qui Rit (The Laughing Elf), served both French fries and cheese curds separately on their menu.

The story has it that one day, a trucker, Eddy Lainesse, passing through stopped at the restaurant and requested that these two items be combined in one dish for them to eat on the go. The restauranteur, Fernand Lachance, complied and remarked that the dish was “poutine,” Quebec slang for “a mess.” The dish caught on and was soon added to the restaurant’s regular menu.

Le Roy Jucep

While most residents of Quebec accept Le Lutin qui Rit as the birthplace of poutine, this is not without controversy. A restaurant called Le Roy Jucep in the town of Drummondville also lodges a claim to be the inventor of poutine. As you may have noticed, the creation from Warwick was missing a key ingredient in the classic poutine – the delicious gravy. This was added to the creation by Le Roy Jucep owner Jean-Paul Roy.

Once again, the story of origins of la poutine centers around a truck driver. In 1964, a trucker popped into the Drummondville restaurant, requesting that the cook add a side order of fresh cheese curds atop a plate of fries and gravy – a dish already regularly served by the restaurant. By all accounts, this became the first time when the three ingredients are noted as being served together in one dish.

Le Roy Jucep, which still stands in Drummondville today, has even registered a trademark noting it as the inventor of poutine. Visitors to the restaurant, located northeast of Montreal, will find a plaque denoting this fact.

Other Possibilities

While these two are the leading contenders for the crown of inventor of poutine – and both likely made important contributions to its creation – there are other places where the creation could have occurred. For example, a restaurant in Princeville called La P’tite Vache served a dish called “mixte” which was one-half fries and one-half cheese curds while topped with gravy. While this dish was created a few years after Le Roy Jucep’s creation, it seems to have been created independently.

Additionally, the dish was served in the regions of Nicolet and Saint-Hyacinthe. Both of which had a large number of cheese dairies that produced cheese curds. Thus, it is not surprising that someone else may have stumbled upon this tasty combination. In other words, it seems that many different places may have had similar ideas over a similar time period. Thus, the true inventor of poutine remains a bit of a mystery.

Poutine: A National Dish

Regardless of the origin, the popularity of poutine took off. In the early stages, it was largely spread by word of mouth of truckers. Today, you can find it throughout Canada. However, Quebec remains the place to go for the best poutine in the world. Montreal seemingly has a poutine restaurant on every block.

Canada’s national dish can be found in fast food restaurants throughout the nation. Meanwhile, many places have put their own spin on this classic. There are even fine dining establishments getting into the mix by adding things like lobster or foie gras. You may even stumble onto a poutine dish in other countries around the world. I recently saw it on a menu in Scotland, a testament to the dish’s appeal.
